August 31, 2011 New iMac Computer Lab Thanks to the amazing generosity of many Saint Rose parishioners, school parents, and community members, Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School has a new computer lab, with 26 brand new iMac computers. The iMacs come equipped with 21-inch flat screen monitors and built-in cameras. They run Apple programs such as iMovie and iPhoto, plus Microsoft Office 2010. This upgrade represents the very cutting edge of technology today and will better prepare our students for high school and beyond. It provides teachers and students with a learning environment to access Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). We extend our sincere gratitude to all who supported this amazing project!
August 31, 2011 Library Makeover Our Saint Rose of Lima school library has undergone an extreme makeover this summer thanks to many volunteer hours from parents and faculty. This was made possible by a $6,000 donation from the Conley fund, a memorial that was given to the parish many years ago from a religious education family. The Roseville librarians helped us develop both short and long-range plans for the space and collection. The library now has a whole new look and feel. Cataloguing software has been purchased and we are in the process of transferring from a card catalog system to automation. Additionally our collection is being enhanced with updated non-fiction and reference materials, current fiction, replacements of well-worn classics, plus religious materials that support our mission as a Catholic School. (A book donation collection box is located in the school office!)

May 6, 2011 Minnesota History Day History Day is a co-curricular program that encourages young people to explore an historical subject related to a theme. Last year, 700,000 students nationwide participated. The 2011 theme was “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures and Consequences.” Twenty-four Saint Rose students participated in this year’s event choosing to do so with papers, websites, and exhibits. We want to make a special mention of Izzy Barona, Cate Huss, and Fiona Hannan, who developed a website titled “The Jungle: Food Processing and FDA Debate.” We are very proud to announce that they placed 5th in the State among 1,000 entries.
April 29, 2011 Lenten Piggy Bank Collections This spring, Saint Rose students decorated Piggy Banks at school and then brought them home. Throughout the season of Lent, students and families collected change in the Lenten Piggy Banks. Many students volunteered their time to do extra chores and jobs to earn these funds. We collected 455.31 for Caring and Sharing Hands, $273.80 for Easter baskets of food given to Keystone Community Services, $67.36 for our Saint Rose Birthday Bank, which funds Birthday Bags for the local food shelves, and $288 for an orphanage in Haiti.
April 21, 2011 STARBASE Again this year, the Saint Rose fourth graders were invited to participate in STARBASE, an exciting and rigorous science, math, technology, and engineering program at the Minnesota Air National Guard Base at Fort Snelling. From April 18 through April 21, our students studied the wonders of flight and space. They experimented with rockets, gliders, and wind tunnels. They explored aircraft and designed computer models using Pro/Engineer CAD software. Thank you to the STARBASE program for this wonderful opportunity!
April 15, 2011 Artist-in-Residence Thanks to the efforts of our Home and School Association and all the parents who support their projects, each year for the past four years we’ve been able to bring an artist into our school for a residence. This year Cyril Paul, Caribbean music and dance artist, joined us for the week of April 11-15. Cyril worked with grades K-3 this year. Together they created an exciting end-of-the-week performance for the whole school. Interestingly, Cyril was a teacher here at Saint Rose in the 1960s. He is also well respected liturgical musician who brings the music of the West Indies into our worship.
March 11, 2011 New Principal Announced With the upcoming retirement of Mr. Greg Pizzolato as our School Principal, Father Fitzpatrick announced today that Mrs. Cressy Epperly has been hired to be the new Saint Rose School Principal. Mrs. Epperly is currently the Principal at Saint Croix Catholic School in Stillwater. She has served in education in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese for 31 years. She has taught at Saint Matthew’s School, the Convent of the Visitation, and Holy Spirit. She has been the Principal at Saint Croix Catholic for the past 11 years. March 4, 2011 8th Grade Retreat As has been the tradition at Saint Rose, our 8th graders recently participated in an overnight retreat at Association Retreat Center in Osceola, Wisconsin. Molly Schorr, the youth minister at Saint Vincent’s in Osseo, served as retreat leader. She focused the retreat on the scripture story of the meeting of the Lord on the way to Emmaus. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to reflect on who the Lord is in their lives and where He may be leading them as they enter High School.
January 25, 2011 Quiz Bowl Our Quiz Bowl team placed seventh out of 44 Catholic Schools participating in this year’s competition. They made it to the fourth round, with victories over Saint Jude, Holy Spirit, and Saint John’s (Savage). Saint Rose teams historically have placed in the top 10 for many years. The Quiz Bowl is sponsored by the Archdiocesan High Schools and is held each year at the University of Saint Thomas. Our team this year was again moderated by Mr. Maroney. Congratulations to Mitchell Jauhola, Patrick Rushman, Jack Schugel, and Hannah Steiner!

January 24, 2011 Winter Social Over 200 friends and families enjoyed a wonderful evening filled with amazing food, beverages, entertainment, and community friendship at Ideal Hall on Saturday, January 22. The evening was a huge success thanks to the great support from area merchants who donated 100% of the food and beverages served, as well as over $1000 in gift cards that were raffled off throughout the evening. The event was parent-volunteer coordinated and all proceeds go to our school. Thank you to all of the merchants and volunteers!

Law School Field Trip
Thanks to the efforts of Dave Bateson, one of our parents and alum, our eighth grade attended a day at the University of Saint Thomas Law School, learning more about our legal system. They examined the trial process and the work of judges and juries. Additionally, they had the chance to experience what it is like to serve on a jury. The day proved to be a wonderful opportunity for our students. Thank you, Dave! January 10, 2011 Saint Rose Basketball Tournament Congratulations to both our Girls’ A and Boys’ A Basketball teams and coaches for taking first place in the Annual Saint Rose Basketball Tournament January 7-9. A big thank you to all the Booster Club members, parents, and students who helped with the event—a great group effort!
December 17, 2010 Christmas Concerts Thank you to all involved in helping us celebrate the Christmas season with music! Our All School Christmas Concert, our band concert, and our prekindergarten concert were great successes. The children looked and performed beautifully, putting us all in the Christmas spirit.
November 29, 2010 Thanksgiving Food Drive As a result of our Student Council-sponsored Thanksgiving Food Drive contest, Saint Rose students brought in an overwhelming 853 non-perishable food items. The Student Council would like to thank everyone who participated. We helped many less fortunate families around the holidays. We encourage everyone to keep bringing in food each Wednesday.
November 9, 2010 Project 75 Our all-parent State of the School meeting on Tuesday, November 9, marked the kick-off of our long-range planning “Project 75” initiative. Project 75 has as its goal to develop a plan of action that will keep Saint Rose viable and sustainable well into the years ahead, despite economic and demographic challenges. The energy was quite high at the meeting as parents broke into small focus groups to share their thoughts about the qualities of Catholic Education that they would like to see continued or developed here at Saint Rose. We hope to have all our parents attend one of our focus groups over the next few months. November 4, 2010

Overall, the Student Council raised $318.35 for “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” with the hope that our contribution will help save a life one day.
October 8, 2010 Marathon Goal Met Thank you to our families, friends, and neighbors for helping support Saint Rose School. We have surpassed our $50,000 goal by a few hundred dollars. The annual Knights of Columbus Marathon for Non-Public Education is our major fundraiser of the year. The money raised helps keep our class sizes small and our educational programs strong. Marathon day, Saturday, October 2, was a beautiful day for our students to walk, run, and bike around the lake at Roseville’s Central Park. (A day earlier, our younger students in grades K-2 participated in our mini-marathon, walking and running laps around the school parking lot.) Great job, everyone!

70th Reunion Saint Rose School celebrated its 70th anniversary on Saturday, September 25, with a special Mass and alumni gathering. Many alumni came to tour the school, reconnect with teachers and classmates and share many memories. As we look toward the 75th anniversary, we hope to include many more alumni and friends of Saint Rose. We have created an alumni database to help us keep in touch with all of those who have been a part of the rich history of Saint Rose School. If you attended Saint Rose (or if you know someone who attended Saint Rose), please give us a call at 651-646-3832 with the contact information. Holy and Good Theme
Once again our theme this year is “Holy and Good.” A huge banner hangs in the main hall reminding the children to live each day in this manner. We start off each morning with school-wide announcements, prayer, and the National Pledge of Allegiance. This year we’ve also added a new “Pledge for Peace:” “I will seek to live in peace with God, my neighbor, and myself. I will bring peace to my part of the earth. I will strive to not harm others—human and animal. I will love my enemies. I will pray for them. I will try to understand our differences from their point of view. I will live in hope that the peace of Christ will touch every human heart.” Finally, every morning, students are reminded to STAY Holy and Good. To read earlier School News Highlights, click here.
